Ideas For Gifts

It is Hello Kitty’s birthday this month and what better way to celebrate then to craft up something pink and saccharin sweet. Ms. Kitty’s founder, Sanrio, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with Small Gift — a tour complete with a pop up shop. Look for this today on Mill Avenue (in front of American Apparel) from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m..

Join the party and toast to Kitty’s birthday wearing a very Hello Kitty neon pink, side-angled bow. You can go online or to the pop up shop and buy a headband bow for $30 but this Thrifty Maker is after the look with out spending the dough.

When I write for the New Times Chow Bella as the Thrifty Maker I like to write about all things that have value and saves some bucks. Right now grapes are in season. Most supermarkets carry them year-round, but peak growing season in North America is July to December. The thinking was to buy grapes while they are in season and the least expensive before the cold blustery days of the desert winter arrives.

So the search was on for a unique recipe to cook grapes as an alternative to popping them in the mouth raw.

The recipe for grape pie was made in honor of the Chow Bella Pie Social happening this weekend. It tasted fine but was really like a jam inside pie crust, very sweet and a little runny. The staff at Chow Bella all felt it should have been made with a peanut butter pie crust and served like a PB and J. Next time. Well there may not be a next time since this wasn’t exactly a hit but hey — sharing failures is good, too.

Fall is pie. It just is. We wait all summer to get at some and so why not wear your pie love on your chest next to your heart. Let the world know your true love by making a necklace. This crafty project is inspired by the pie social happening this weekend in Phoenix that is sponsored by Chow Bella.

I found a great Halloween tee-shirt at a thrift store and I turned it into a bag for trick-or-treating.

Here is how to make one:

1. Find a size large t-shirt at a thrift shop. Cut off the arms and neck but leave a small amount that will act as the handles.

2. Flip it inside out and sew along the bottom, closing it off the create the bag shape.

3. Turn it right side out and now it is time to decorate.

4. I cut a spider out of black broad cloth on the Cricut and ironed it on using Wonder Under Fusible Web. I attached yellow felt, green foam and googly eyes for the eye area.

5. I then attached black and white safety pins, a black shoelace for the spiders string, black and white ribbon and then used a rubber stamp “boo” along the bottom edge.

Make yourself a DIY trick-or-treat bag.
